UPI Frauds

UPI frauds are a growing concern in India, where cybercriminals exploit the popularity of digital payment systems. These scams target individuals and businesses, attempting to steal funds or sensitive information. Here's what you should be aware of:

Modus Operandi:

  • Fake Apps: Scammers create fake UPI apps that mimic legitimate ones, tricking users into downloading and using them for transactions.
  • Impersonation:Fraudsters may impersonate trusted entities, such as banks or government agencies, through phone calls, emails, or text messages.
  • Phishing Links:Victims receive phishing links that lead to fake UPI websites asking for login credentials and personal information.
  • SIM Swapping:Cybercriminals can fraudulently obtain a victim's SIM card to intercept OTPs (One-Time Passwords) and gain unauthorized access to their UPI account.
  • Unauthorized Transactions:Scammers initiate unauthorized UPI transactions from the victim's account, transferring funds to their own accounts.
  • QR Code scams:Fraudsters either send a QR code or a request to accept payment on the pretext of purchase of item listed by the victim. It may be a second-hand item listed for sale or house for rent, fraudsters may even be willing to pay without checking the item. Fraudsters in many cases send a small amount to victims to gain their trust.
